You're right, you shouldn't complain. You should be thankful that you had an opportunity like that.. out of luck, might I add.

Free is good.....although you can experience the same pretenses of unhappy wealth on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

When you want to dumb it down, drive up to the lake and take pictures of the 'Hometown of Vern Troyer" billboard....nothing says reality quite like that.

Interesting comments. Sorry about your friends...that's tough at any age.

Regarding future employment, the one thing you need to keep in mind is that bright, motivated people will do well regardless of the overall economyand that true success should never be measured in material means.

The focus the other cultures bring to disciplines such as Engineering means that we'll just end up with more unemployed engineers. The law of supply and demand is one of the strongest laws in physics. The train has already left the station for any elementary school student who knows what they want to be (with the exception of 'cowboy' and 'fireman'). I don't recall any of you saying "I'd like to have a career in Health Care." when you were that age even though that would have been a very wise choice.

So do your homework, pass your classes, keep your scholarship, and position yourself to be ready for whatever opportunity presents itself.

Well put....although you ought to think again about your comment "no one wants to buy anything." In actuality, people do want to, and need to, buy things. They're just more selective and wiser about what they want to buy. So the smart money is on the low-cost, discount retailers and the repair shops.

And the key to the entrepreneur-ness is not to look at what people want (or don't want) right now, but what they will want (or don't want) 3 years from now.

re: #3 -- The reason the manufacturer creates power as opposed to efficiency is that the consumer market desires power (big honkin' pickup trucks) over effeciency (small euro-cars). Where the government has value is encouraging the market (in the form of tax credits, etc.) As soon as consumers want something different, the manufacturers will follow.
